About Dr. Samson

Dr. Russell H. Samson, MD, FACS, RVT, DFSVS graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in 1972. He received the Cottrell Memorial Award for academic excellence and contribution to student affairs. He was also the President of the Association of Medical Students of South Africa.

Educational Background

Dr. Samson did his internship in General Medicine and Surgery at the Johannesburg Academic Hospital in South Africa. After that, he completed his surgical residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in New York City. Subsequently, he took a one-year fellowship in Peripheral Vascular Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center.

Dr. Samson joined the teaching staff at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1980, achieving the rank of Associate Professor of Surgery. He also served as Director of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratories and Chief of Vascular Surgery at Bronx Municipal Center in New York City from 1980 to 1986.

Professional Background

Dr. Samson has been in practice in Sarasota, FL since 1986. He has served as the Chief of Surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Doctors Hospital. He was also a medical executive at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Currently, Dr. Samson is a Clinical Professor of Vascular Surgery at Florida State University Medical School. He has written over 90 scientific papers and 26 textbook chapters related to vascular surgery and has lectured at hundreds of scientific meetings throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Samson is a reviewing editor for the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery. He is the vascular medicine section editor for the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery journal and has been the guest editor for Seminars in Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Samson was the assistant editor for the sixth edition of Vascular Surgery, the premier textbook in the field of vascular diseases. He is also the editor of Vascular Specialist, the official publication of the Society for Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Samson holds a patent for a new anticoagulant and an instrument cleaning device for the operating room. He also has developed a widely used stocking treatment for leg ulcers as well as software programs to assess clinical outcomes and report results of vascular laboratory findings.

Additional Information

Dr. Samson was board-certified in General Surgery in 1980, and was subsequently recertified in 1993 and 2003. In 1983, he was certified for having special qualifications in vascular surgery. At that time, less than 400 surgeons across the country have been given certificates.

Dr. Samson is married and is the proud father of a grown son and daughter.
